SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

at the North Penn Hernia Institute
Surgical Repair of Inguinal, Femoral, Umbilical and Most Incisional Hernias can be Safely and Effectively performed as a "Same Day", Ambulatory Procedure. With the patient awake, yet sedated and comfortably free of pain, the risks of General Anesthesia are avoided. Our patients are walking shortly after surgery, and are
Discharged Home within about 1-2 hours.
We utilize a Mini-Incison "Open" Technique. Under most circumstances, our incisions are very small (about 2 inches or less), located directly over the hernia.
For the most common INGUINAL HERNIA, we utilize a "Tension Free" repair by inserting Mesh to close the hernia defect. This is associated with the Lowest Risk of Recurrence, when compared to other techniques, including the "Canadian" operation. In addition, and equally important, there is Minimal Post Operative Discomfort, Few Restrictions on Activity and you
RETURN TO NORMAL ACTIVITY IN DAYS!

INGUINAL HERNIAS

INGUINAL or 'groin' hernias are the most frequent site for hernia development. They develop as the result of a weakness, tear or opening in the muscle wall of the abdomen. Inguinal Hernias are located in the lower abdomen (right or left), just above the leg crease or toward the pubic area. They usually show up as a 'bulge", which increases in size and becomes more uncomfortable.

The Surgeons and Staff at The North Penn Hernia Institute are fully trained in the contemporary, state of the art management and surgical repair of all abdominal hernias, including New and Recurrent Inguinal Hernias. Surgical Repair is performed under mild sedation and local anesthesia, with Minimal Surgical Invasion. This allows the procedure to be done generally as an outpatient, with discharge on the "Same Day".

INCISIONAL and UMBILICAL HERNIAS

INCISIONAL or Ventral Hernias may occur in the area of any prior surgical incision. These occur as a bulge or pertrusion in the area of the prior scar. They may develop soon after the original surgery, or at any time thereafter, but they gradually increase in size and become progressively symptomatic.

UMBILICAL Hernias develop in the area of the Umbilicus. Although often appearing at birth, these hernias can also occur at any time during life. They increase in size and often become problematic.

At The NORTH PENN HERNIA INSTITUTE our Surgical Staff is able to repair these hernias effectively , most often as a "One Day" Proceedure. This permits discharge on the same day as surgery.
